Laapataa Ladies Film Review: A Classic Blend of Entertainment

Laapataa Ladies” earns a stellar review rating of 4.5 out of 5, showcasing its exceptional quality and entertainment value. The film features Nitanshi Goel in a leading role alongside a talented ensemble cast including Ravi Kishan, Rachna Gupta, Chhaya Kadam, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava, under the adept direction of Kiran Rao. What makes this film truly stand out is its ability to seamlessly blend unabashed fun with subtle yet impactful social commentary, offering audiences a delightful dose of sugar-coated social medicine. Remarkably, there’s little to fault in this cinematic masterpiece, as it flawlessly navigates between entertainment and substance. With a runtime of 126 minutes, every moment is packed with significance, making it unwise to even consider a loo break or glance at your watch for fear of missing out on important plot developments or charming nuances. The film’s use of Hindi adds authenticity and relatability to its narrative, further enriching the viewing experience. For those seeking an engaging and thoroughly enjoyable cinematic journey, “Laapataa Ladies” is a must-watch, available exclusively in theaters.

The narrative is set in the central Indian state of Nirmal Pradesh, which is fictitious. Our protagonist Deepak (Sparsh Shrivastava) pulls his sleeping bride out of the train taking them home to his native village at night, only to find that he has brought home the wrong woman! In this place, newlywed brides are required to cover their faces with a ghunghat constantly! The reason for this is that the same compartment contained three recently married couples! The movie then follows him as he looks for his true wife, who has arrived at another station and is lost and upset because she has no way of getting in touch with him.

Laapataa Ladies Movie Review and Script Analysis

Writer Biplab Goswami’s intriguing story has real-life echoes, as similar stories have occurred in North India, and there are gangs involved in such cases, allowing the ‘brides’ to flee with cash and jewelry later. However, the script takes a refreshing turn in the final 25 minutes.

Laapataa Ladies is distinguished by razor-sharp dialogue and a concise script with no unnecessary footage. This film adheres faithfully and consistently to a dialect as well as the nuances of pronunciation and diction. Sneha Desai has written an engrossing screenplay, and her dialogues (with Divyanidhi Sharma) are not only realistic, but also extremely witty and humorous.

The script follows a relentlessly realistic and logical path while keeping the fun factor as an undercurrent in the story, which contains elements of both tragedy and comedy. The cop’s first reaction when Deepak narrates his woes is amusement at his “achieving” something he has never been able to do with his own wife! On the other hand, the script gives him a whopper climax with powerful lines that are sure to win over the audience, confirming what director and co-producer Kiran has stated—that Aamir Khan wanted to play the part!

Laapataa Ladies Movie Review: Star Performance.

Only terrible actors can perform poorly when everything is going their way. Romil, the casting director, has skillfully sourced consummate performers. Nitanshi Goel delivers an outstanding performance as the charming, idealistic, old-world bride. In terms of acting accolades, it’s difficult to choose between Pratibha Ranta and her, because Pratibha’s character progresses from a girl who is afraid of the police but has a warm relationship with Deepak’s bhabhi and young nephew to someone whose activities raise the cop’s suspicion.

Sparsh Shrivastava is flawless, as are the numerous actors who portray his family and friends. Special mention goes to Geeta Agarwal Sharma as his mother, Pankaj Sharma as his father, Kirti Jain as his grandmother, and Rachna Gupta as his bhabhi.

Review of Laapataa Ladies: Direction, Scoring

However, Laapataa Ladies is ultimately Kiran Rao’s success. Even though Aamir Khan starred in it, Dhobi Ghat, her final (and first) film as a director, was a mainstream movie with a specialized audience. This time, she makes a far superior film, one that easily stands in the upper echelons of Aamir Khan’s career (Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par, Delhi Belly, Dangal, and Secret Superstar are just a few examples) and slams into the mainstream.

Kiran deserves special recognition for her handling of the different police station scenes, the touching exchanges between Manju Maai and Phool, the inebriated scene involving Deepak and his friends, and the entire surprise of a climax.

The lyrics to Sukhwinder Singh’s energetic song Doubtva and Shreya Ghoshal’s tender rendition of Dheeme Dheeme, both penned by Divyanidhi Sharma and Swanand Kirkire, are incredibly meaningful. Additionally, Prashant Pandey writes the poignant Beda paar, which Sona Mohapatra does a respectable job of singing. Arijit Singh pronounces the Hindi “ta” sound incorrectly, but he is fine in Sajni.

Review of Laapataa Ladies: The Final Word

Because of its progressive perspectives, the movie is not only a good value for money but also something you will watch at home. This applies to both women and society as a whole. It feeds the audience some homileries without shoving them down their psychological throats by sugarcoating some delicious flavors of village life.
