Japan, starring renowned actor Karthi, debuted in theaters today. Check out how it performs by reading our review.

Story:

In Hyderabad, a big gold theft costs a jewelry store Rs. 200 crores. Japan, a well-known thief, is suspected by the police (Karthi). The Home Minister, KS Ravi Kumar, calls for a prompt conclusion. Japan claims he didn’t commit the crime when the police corner him.

Extra Credits:

Karthi does a fantastic job playing a notorious thief. His character is cleverly written, and even in serious situations, people can’t help but laugh at his ever-so-chilly manner and clever dialogue.

Renowned director and cinematographer Vijay Milton gives an excellent performance. His comic timing at the start of the movie makes people laugh.

Sunil gives an adequate performance as well, and GV Prakash Kumar’s soundtrack enhances the film.

Negative Points

The film rapidly deteriorates from its strong beginning because of a dull plot and a shoddy screenplay. Director and writer Raju Murugan fails to create a compelling cat-and-mouse game in Japan.

A more succinct screenplay by Raju Murugan might have accelerated the movie’s pacing.

The movie isn’t much enhanced by Anu Emmanuel. She doesn’t spend much more than ten minutes on screen at any point, and even her scenes with Karthi are uninteresting.

Strong characters and an engaging plot are absent from the movie. There is underutilization of KS Ravi Kumar.

The film has a lot of action scenes, but they could have been better arranged to appeal to a wider viewership.

Technical Details:

Raju Murugan, the director, falls short as a writer and director, failing to capitalize on Karthi’s acting prowess.

One notable advantage is the music of GV Prakash Kumar. The editing needs more work, but the production values and cinematography are respectable. Although the dubbing is quite good, the visual effects are mediocre and the movie feels like a Telugu film.

Decision:

Japan is a slow-moving, action-packed drama about crime and comedy overall. The film’s highlights are Karthi’s clever performance, hilarious dialogue, and beautiful soundtrack. But the weak screenplay and thin plot lessen the overall impact. This weekend, it might be wiser to look into alternative viewing options.
