Aditi Rao Hydari’s portrayal of Bibbo Jaan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, which is presently available for viewing on Netflix, has her hogging all the attention online. The actress is also receiving praise for her rendition of the song Saiyaan, Hato Jaao Tum.

The one stride, a 15–20 second clip from the song that has gone particularly viral, has been identified as the Gaja Gamini walk. We chose to explain this step to you, even if the internet is replaying this walk endlessly.

In the Netflix web series Heermandi, Aditi Rao Hydari’s character Bibbo Jaan gives a Mujra to Fardeen Khan’s character, who is a Nawab. Even though the full mujra has been extraordinary, one particular Gaja Gamini walk has become widespread online.

Gaja Gamini Walk: What is it?

This reverse walk, sometimes referred to as the Swan Walk, is the ideal seduction maneuver. In the Kamasutra, a female elephant is seen as the embodiment of unbridled, primal sexual force; similarly, it represents sensuality and grace. Ved Vyas mentions Gaja Gamini’s stroll in the Mahabharata, where Draupadi is referred to as Mada.

The stroll simply refers to a woman with plump but elegant features. In a recent Zoom interview, Aditi Rao Hydrari highlighted the trek from Heeramandi, adding, “I want to ask somebody, Sanjay sir, my dancing guru, what it is. Is this the Gajagamini or Swan Walk? I am not sure about the walk you are referring to! I know there is a Mayur chaal (peacock walk) in Kathak and a Gaja Gamini (walk of seduction), but I’m not sure if it is in all dance styles; I should research it.”

The Women Who Nail the Act

Before Aditi Rao Hydari, only two women had mastered the Gaja Gamini walk. Madhubala was the first to perform it, doing so in the song Mohe Panghat Pe Nand Laal Chhed Gayo Re. Despite Madhubala’s limitations as a dancer, Kathak Maestro Lacchhu Maharaj choreographed this song in 5 days. The song was part of K Asif’s album Mughal-E-Azam.

The OG Gaja Gamini

Onscreen, the other woman who nailed it was referred to as Gaja Gamini. Madhuri Dixit performed Gaja Gamini Walk in the title song for MF Hussain’s film of the same name, which was choreographed by Saroj Khan. Have a peek.

Aditi Rao Hydari is now the third Bollywood actress to have taken this step, following in the footsteps of Gaja Gamini. Or do we wonder if others have gone unexplored?
