Mr & Mrs Mahi Movie Review: Rajkummar Rao Stands Out In A Story Of Struggles And Dreams

Sharan Sharma’s directorial vision for “Mr & Mrs Mahi” was geared towards crafting a romantic narrative revolving around the shared interests of its protagonists. The film, featuring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor in leading roles, and under Sharma’s direction, sets out to explore this theme.

Critically, the film has received a rating of 3 out of 5 stars.

The casting, with Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor at the forefront, deserves commendation. Specifically, Rajkummar Rao’s performance stands out as a highlight, adding depth and authenticity to the characters.

However, a notable drawback is the film’s limited exploration of cricket, which may leave enthusiasts of the sport wanting more substantial representation.

Viewers are advised that the initial half of the film may seem slow-paced, providing ample opportunities for breaks without missing crucial plot developments.

The decision of whether to watch “Mr & Mrs Mahi” hinges largely on one’s admiration for Rajkummar Rao and interest in cricket. For those who hold a fondness for both, the film may offer a compelling viewing experience.

The primary language spoken in the film is Hindi, and it is currently available for theatrical release, boasting a runtime of 139 minutes.

Mahendra (Rajkummar Rao) dreams of becoming a cricketer but is rejected during the selection process. His father is dissatisfied and makes him work at his sports business. After a few years, Mahendra marries Mahima (Janhvi Kapoor), a doctor. He eventually realizes that Mahima enjoys and knows how to play cricket. Mahendra resolves to coach his wife so she can progress in the game and realize her ambition of becoming a cricketer.

Mr. and Mrs. Mahi movie review: script analysis

The story of “Mr & Mrs Mahi” was written by directors Sharan Sharma and Nikhil Mehrotra. It’s an intriguing thought that a pair in an arranged marriage discovers and pursues their shared interest. The first hour is more focused on Mahendra’s emotional troubles and his relationship with his father. Even when Mahima enters the story, the filmmakers take a deliberate way to demonstrate her cricket abilities. The emphasis is on developing their love story despite the difficulties.

In the second half, “Mr & Mrs Mahi” juggles cricket and jealousy. The entire sequence in which Mahendra trains Mahima is riveting, but we expect more such thrilling moments. But this does not occur until the climax. The second part concentrates on Mahendra’s internal issues and is heavily influenced by the husband-wife conflict. Amidst all of the drama, the cricket aspect is overlooked.

Mr. & Mrs. Mahi Film Review: Star Performance

Rajkummar Rao embodies the depth and passion required to portray Mahendra, who is heavily criticized by his father. He conveys Mahendra’s pain convincingly, whether through his expressions or dialogue delivery. He has you in splits during a scenario in which he produces ridiculous films as his wife Mahima’s instructor. Rajkummar easily transitions from serious to comedic.

Janhvi Kapoor gives a good performance, however, she is underutilized as Mahima. Most of her scenes feature her crying and speaking softly. I understand the novel takes place in Jaipur, and not everyone is a rebel there. Given that Mahima has left her previous life behind, one would expect her to take up for herself after learning of her husband’s intentions. Sadly, this does not happen. Janhvi’s character felt like an extension of her role in “Bawaal.”

Mr & Mrs Mahi Movie Review: Direction and Music

Sharan Sharma wanted to create a love story about two people who shared a common passion. His objective is clear: to portray an inspiring story about a guy searching for himself and assisting his wife in achieving her dreams. However, amid the jealousy drama and Mahendra’s internal issues, the core idea frequently loses its appeal. I also wish there were more cricket match sequences in the second half to further highlight Mahima’s talent.

The music in “Mr & Mrs Mahi” is amazing. Vishal Mishra’s “Roya Jab Tu” is my favorite song from the album.

Mr & Mrs Mahi Film Review: The Final Word

Overall, “Mr & Mrs Mahi” wants to portray an uplifting story about a couple who support each other realize their goals. The story is fraught with obstacles, reflecting the difficulties they face on their journey. Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor’s love tale has moments where you can’t help but smile because of how cute they look together on screen.
