As viewers, we’ve grown so used to fast-paced narratives in the last several years that anything even somewhat slow feels like it’s asking too much of us. In Merry Christmas, Sriram Raghavan ensures that his characters have enough of time to breathe, converse, and even take a stroll about town, all the while telling the story of a woman in an unhappy marriage and a guy with a mystery history.

Naturally, there will be comparisons between Merry Christmas and Sriram’s last film, Andhadhun. But while Andhadhun’s first half featured an incredible interval block and was an incredible ride, Merry Christmas’s second half sees it slowly unleash its inner devil. Does the film’s conclusion explain all of the whys and wherefores in a cohesive manner? Perhaps not.

Although Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi’s relationship has previously been extensively reported, it now makes sense why everyone has been anticipating seeing this on-screen duo. Vijay has an air of subtlety and spontaneity, which stands in stark contrast to Katrina’s accuracy and refinement. However, the soft auras that both actors exude complement each other perfectly.

Even though Vijay and Katrina are excellent in their parts, Ashwini Kalsekar and Shanmugarajan have the most memorable lines that will make you laugh out loud. It is appropriate to include both of their characters on the list of supporting figures deserving of a spinoff.

A character in the movie informs another that watching a movie without popcorn is pointless. In the same way, it’s pointless to watch a Sriram Raghavan film if you don’t anticipate random flashbacks, movie allusions, outrageous characters, and an exciting ride. All of this also applies to a Merry Christmas, albeit in a more subdued and informal way.
