Karan Johar recently praised Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal’ in a roundtable discussion. He called the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer ‘the best film of the year,’ adding that he saw it twice. He also admitted that he needed courage to make that statement because he was afraid of being judged.

Karan Johar, along with Sandeep Reddy Vanga, attended Galatta Plus’ Mega Pan India Roundtable 2023. The director, who was seated directly in front of him, praised ‘Animal,’ calling it the ‘best film’ of 2023.
Johar expressed, “There have been instances where individuals approached me following my enthusiastic discussion about my admiration for ‘Animal,’ stating, ‘You’re behind ‘Rocky Aur Rani…,’ considering it as the antidote for a film like ‘Animal.’ It represents the opposite end of the spectrum.’ In response, I strongly disagreed, emphasizing that, in my opinion, ‘Animal’ stands as the standout film of the year. It required considerable introspection and courage for me to make such a statement, especially when surrounded by others, as the fear of judgment often lingers. Similar sentiments arose during the release of ‘Kabir Singh,’ a film I also cherished. Despite anticipating disapproving glances from certain quarters, I’ve reached a point where I no longer concern myself with others’ opinions.”
I loved ‘Animal’ for its front-footed, absolutely conviction-based narrative storytelling, breaking grammar, breaking myths, and breaking everything that you think conforms to mainstream cinema, Karan Johar said, discussing his favorite aspects of the movie. All of a sudden, there’s an interval block where everyone is singing a song and the hero is getting beat up. Where have you seen a sequence like this? I ask. It’s very clever.
I saw the film twice, once as an audience member and once as a student, he added. I believe the success and acceptance of ‘Animal’ is game-changing. I want to have conviction.
‘Animal,’ has surpassed Sidharth Anand’s action film, ‘Pathaan,’ in box office receipts. In the final weekend of 2023, the film earned Rs 4.07 crore. After ‘Jawan,’ ‘Animal’ has now earned Rs 544.93 crores (net).
