Today marks the release of 800: The Movie, a biography on the renowned cricket player and bowler Muttiah Muralitharan. In this sports drama, Madhur Mittal, star of Slumdog Millionaire, portrays Muralitharan. Check it out by reading our review.

800 The Movie Story:

The life of Sri Lankan cricket legend Muttiah Muralitharan is told in the narrative. It delves into his professional and personal life, encompassing the struggles his family endures as a result of ethnic conflicts in Sri Lanka. The story also explores the controversy surrounding his unusual bowling motion and his challenges both before and after he started playing international cricket.

Bonus Points:

Madhur Mittal portrays the renowned cricket player Muttiah Muralitharan with impeccable accuracy. Madhur gives a subtle performance that successfully draws the spectator into the role.

Many of the sequences in the second portion of the movie strike a chord with the audience, especially the ones that show the real bowling movement of Muralitharan.

Some poignant moments are done really well. The other performers do a respectable job in their parts, but Nassar’s role is noteworthy and he plays it to perfection. Furthermore, the Telugu dubbing is good.

Negative Points:

The ability to enjoy a well-known story—especially one involving a well-known person—largely hinges on how well it is told. This is especially important for biopics, and it’s where M.S. Sripathy, the filmmaker, doesn’t make a lasting impression.

Usually, audiences are looking for a more in-depth examination of events that they have already seen in different contexts. In the case of 800, Muttaih Muralitharan’s life is filled with many similar instances. Unfortunately, the director loses touch with the viewer on an emotional level when presenting them.

Technical Aspects:

M.S. Sripathy should have done a better job as a writer and filmmaker, if only to create a more sophisticated biopic and honor the renowned bowler.

Praveen K. L.’s editing might have been more precise. Still, the production qualities and cinematography are good.

Verdict:

Overall, 800 is a biopic that only occasionally engages the viewer. The film’s highlights are a few poignant moments in the second half and Madhur Mittal’s outstanding portrayal as Muttaih Muralitharan. It is, however, hampered by a dull screenplay that lacks emotional depth in several scenes and is slow in both parts. This weekend, viewers who are more interested in knowing about Muttaiah’s personal life than his cricket career can watch this film.
