Story:

The main characters of the script also escalate around the protagonist, a boxer Esteban Osuna ‘La Máquina’(Gael García Bernal) in his post-prime age. Esteban will do anything to regain his position which he recently lost in the ring after a very embarrassing move. Andy Luja (Diego Luna) is Esteban’s manager and also his best friend he also has a business interest in Esteban yet finds out he has to deal with the ugly side of life in Mexico that put both their lives at risk.

Key Plot Points
  • The Comeback: The series begins with Esteban’s blow and establishes him as an ex-boxer who wants to get back in the ring and have some dignity from the other members of the boxing fraternity. Andy pressures him into agreeing to a fatal brawl with the current welterweight champion in rather suspicious circumstances.
  • Corruption in Boxing: On their way to return to the ring, they stand before a dangerous criminal organization that insists Esteban lose the next bout. This kind of profiteering compromises their relationship and brings out issues to do with corruption in sports.
  • Personal Struggles: Esteban struggles with alcoholism and mental disorder, he sees things that expose holes in his mind. His estranged wife, Irasema, whom he was married to and later divorced, works as a sports news reporter for a local television station also brings worry for his health into the light and tries to spare their kids from the worst.
  • Tension and Betrayal: The series develops tension as Esteban and Andy fight foes that are in their inner team and from the outside world. It is even higher here because now they face not only their sins but also the sinful world around them.

Still, the show has an appropriate combination of the drama of sport and a thriller plot and, therefore, increases the interest of the audience.

Review:

It is universally acknowledged that La Máquina has received mostly positive criticism from the critics. While the combination of offering fans more of the universe inhabited by ‘Sherlock’ and ‘Mycroft’ Holmes while expanding its dramatic canvas to include a third partner, critics have commented that episodes vary in pacing somewhat.

Positives:

  • Strong Performances: Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna give a very realistic portrayal of two men who are in love with each other but cannot be together. That brought quite complex characteristics to the overall existence of the film and depth to the main narrative.
  • Engaging Storyline: Combining sports drama with some crime gives a good plot that makes people interested step by step.
  • Cultural Context: Told in eight separate episodes it provides an overview of Mexican culture regarding boxing and specifically touches upon the values of loyalty, ambition, and the concept of moral gray area.

Negatives:

  • Pacing Issues: A few participants complained that here and there episodes seemed to be stretched and thus may not elicit as much interest.
  • Predictable Tropes: Despite the general entertainment of the storytelling the audience might sometimes find specific twists and turns rather clichéd if experienced the movies of dramatic sports or crime genres.
  • Character Development: While the main protagonists are rendered out to near perfection, the same can not be said of some of the support characters.

Technical Aspects:

La Máquina is a show that lasts for around 50 minutes in each episode, but still effectively allows the development of characters’ relationships within short episodes, but it is fast moving series.

  • Cinematography: There is superb use of visuals which brings to the fore not only the physical violence of boxing but also the inside-out emotional drama of interpersonal relationships. Close-up shots during the fight scenes create tension while the broad shots showcase relationships between characters.
  • Direction: Coming back to the technical execution of this film, Gabriel Ripstein’s direction is very good mainly because he combines action and storytelling. He there demonstrates his ability to make settings that are hard-boiled yet shareable emotionally so that the audience can become invested in the characters.
  • Editing: The editing is also as good as steady but there are moments in which it is rather questionable at transitions between scenes. Occasionally there is very little mystery why some scenes might be sharper: there are transitions that would benefit from a more elegant cut.

Performance:

  • Gael García Bernal in Esteban ‘La Máquina’ Osuna: Gael García Bernal has once again given a great account of his acting skills as Esteban. He succeeds in capturing a combination of weakness and desire together with the ability to chart a difficult emotional landscape. Akin to what a fading boxer goes through in his life, his physical appearance for the film has also changed.
  • Diego Luna as Andy Luja: Diego Luna deserves special mention for portraying Andy Luja the manager of Esteban The Charm in the film. He is funny and there are times he looks really bothered about his friend’s business. It is nice to switch from funny to not funny and I think Lunas’ balance between the two qualities made their friendship enjoyable.
  • Eiza González as Irasema: Eiza González delivers a good account of Irasema whose career consciousness is equally matched by her emotional responsibilities as a mother. She brings the love story between her and Esteban plus the search for a better future for the children.
  • Supporting Cast: There is some special appearance that provides a very good input to the film, but there are some characters whose in-depth portrayal could have been a good influence on the viewers.

Moviepoptime Review:

The series “La Maquina” is one of the company’s finest pieces and involves Mexican actors Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, and Eiza Gonzalez, all of who are set on commencing a huge movement in Hollywood. Gael Garcia Bernal does an excellent job of portraying a washed-up prizefighter Esteban, and Diego Luna is equally good as the savvy manager Andy. Eiza Gonzalez surprises as Irasema giving more layers to the story. The series is perfectly piloted by Gabriel Ripstein who directs it and adds a perfect crime drama and mystery twist to it. It must be noted that Lucia Mendez makes a special appearance and greatly enhances the show as well as provides the much-needed class in “La Maquina”.

Conclusion:

La Máquina is nothing but an excellent and interesting take on the great themes of ambition and evil inside the ring. By its means, the show delivers excellent acting performances, and a wide variety of narratives to explore the world of injustice and the essence of betrayal.

Despite the conflicts may be a little slow or formulaic for a sports drama common in the tropes, the biggest asset… is an overarching personal drama infused with larger themes of social realities. Entertaining and thought-provoking the series examines the challenges that protagonists who aim high, despite all sorts of obstacles, have to face.

In conclusion, it must be said that La Máquina is a must-watch for every sports drama aficionado who is interested in a character drama that puts into question the values of success and ethics. This puts it in Hulu where audiences hungry for the next big intellectual piece seeking to challenge and provoke and make them reflect on ambition and integrity in the modern world, will find. Although much of this series revolves around boxing, it isn’t only about boxing; viewers walk away with a thought-provoking feeling about their dreams as they follow Esteban’s journey of adversity and triumph hence this series is not just about boxing but life.
