Story:

Thus, the movie is based on one talented Dakota Fanning – a young lady, an artist, but not strong at all – once upon a time Mina is travelling in her car and, by some chance, it also runs out of gasoline in the middle of the thick forest. Seeking shelter, she encounters a mysterious bunker inhabited by three strangers: Madeline played by Olwen Fouéré, Ciara portrayed by Georgina Campbell, and Daniel portrayed by Olivar Finnegan.

The last among them is at night they get to know people are watching them and those are referred to as ‘The Watchers’. There is a rule that must not be violated at night because if the group goes out, they are likely to be killed. When and where is Mina afraid and what must she do to free herself out of this grim scenario?

Review:

Therefore, one can consider that the background for the story of “The Watchers” is quite intriguing and can fit the frame of creating suspense. However, skeptics of the film have pointed out that despite this territory first establishing itself in the introduction part then gaining good ground, the movie loses tensions and continuity in the following sequences. The main weakness of the exposition-driven approach has been identified and consists of the replacement of subtlety with exposition, which weakens interest in the storyline.

Positives:

  • Atmospheric Setting: What makes it worse is the fact that the active forest background establishes a very frightening mood as a true horror flick.
  • Strong Lead Performance: Dakota Fanning certainly chose a good role as Mina and she was convincing and profound within the movie.
  • Intriguing Concept: As much as others may imply, Jones expresses frightened through potential spying by unauthorized creatures which is a gloomy encompassing psychological thriller tone.

Negatives:

  • Pacing Issues: There also lies a crucial issue to do with the pacing of the film; it is extremely slow all through the second act and several of the scenes, in contrast, appear either stretched out or shortened.
  • Underdeveloped Characters: Actually, the main character Mina is complex and complete, but other characters do not make the audience sympathetic to them.
  • Predictable Plot Points: A lot of twists and revelations might appear clichéd for a horror lover, which in turn takes away a great part of the scare.

Technical Aspects:

  • Direction: That has to do more with the helming of Ishana Shyamalan who seems to be a promising director now and then but here does not seem to give his best shot; the movie fails to convincingly convey a lot of many scenes which could have been explained well more through visuals than verbal descriptions.
  • Cinematography: The application of montages in the cinematography can help create a correct impression of a forest, inhabited by evil spirits but some scenes reveal the strategy of focusing too much on long shots, and therefore, time in a movie is delayed.
  • Sound Design: The aspect of the movie that may help capture the viewer’s attention is the sound system: the operators used quite disturbing noises that created a feeling of fear in most of the scenes.

Performance:

Dakota Fanning deserves special credit for choosing the realistic and persistent attitude of the character Mina. Good performances are received from Olwen Fouéré and Georgina Campbell but they have remarkably little to do.

Moviepoptime Review:

Oh, I liked it, it was really good this movie! That was rather dark and I could see shades of Lady in the Water in it. Both Ishana and her father repeated the same twist just like in Shyamalan’s films. So, as I thought spectators, who know the lore of Fae, changelings etc., would enjoy a great story.

It also has many dramatic sequences – not as many as would make you uncomfortable or even anxious but enough to make you worried. Still, in my view, a great movie stirs the emotions of those who are watching the movie. I was fine with Dakota Fanning; if she wanted to, she could be one of the rarest talents which only needs eyes to act. In my opinion, it beats watching.

Conclusion:

There are some ways in which ‘The Watchers’ could have been compelling dramatic and suspenseful for readers with that basic idea alone, but in that it fails it could be blamed on the movie’s slow pacing and character development. There is much to praise – Dakota Fanning gives her all in the acting, the background is tense and the plot is infused with suspense – however, there is much to discuss – in essence, Too Young to Marry tells more through dialogue with intriguing plot holes and quite predictable.

As much as there is potential in its young creator, Ishana Shyamalan, the biopic missteps give evidence of what she has yet to perfect in her craft. So, for those who anticipated the psychological horror evident with supernatural kinks, this movie is chock full of then the obvious negatives may still make it worth the watch.
