Artists are citizens of the country with every right to hold the authorities accountable, according to legendary actor Kamal Haasan, who admits there is a “risk” in making films that criticize the government.
The actor was addressed during the trailer launch for his new film “Hindustani 2: Zero Tolerance,” in which he reprises his role as Senapathy, a freedom fighter-turned-vigilante who fought corruption in India.
The planned film, titled “Indian 2: Zero Tolerance” in Tamil, is a sequel to Kamal’s 1996 successful film “Indian,” in which he played a dual role. Shankar will return to direct the second installment in the franchise.
When asked if it is difficult to make films that criticize the government now, the actor stated that this problem has been since the British era.
“People were still making films back then. We will continue to make those kinds of films, regardless of who is at the top of the system. It is not only the filmmaker’s right to pose those questions; it is also the right of every citizen.
“As artists, we represent so many of you people. Because of the acclaim, we believe we are your representatives, therefore we speak fearlessly, without worrying about the guillotine. Yes, there is a chance that the government would become enraged, but your applause puts out that fire, so make it louder,” Kamal told reporters here.
The 69-year-old claimed that not only politicians but also civilians, are to blame for the country’s corruption problems.
“We are all accountable for the corruption and must all change our minds. Elections are the perfect moment to modify our minds. These are some examples of how wicked we have become… Corruption has caused no changes. “The collective conscience will change everything,” he added.
While the actor-filmmaker admires Mahatma Gandhi, he does not believe in his tolerance concept. Kamal also directed and featured in “Hey Ram,” a 2000 film about Gandhi’s killing.
“I am a huge fan of Gandhi Ji. ‘What do you think about tolerance?’ They say he taught you. I’ll admit that I’m not a big admirer of tolerance. Gandhi ji is my hero, but who do you tolerate? Not a buddy.
“I want friendship to spread throughout the planet. You can tolerate a headache. You must have no tolerance for anything that causes societal problems. “Find some medicine and put it out,” he suggested.
Rakul Preet Singh, Siddharth, and Kajal Aggarwal will feature in the July 12 release of “Hindustani 2”.
