Story:

This storyline is a story about an unnamed chef (Ariana DeBose) who quits her job at a great restaurant where she is working to become an owner of her restaurant. Supported by a smooth financial wizard Andres (Arian Moayed) she opens a business in a remote mansion which is believed to be a place of ghosts. She goes through all the hardships of making her menu and controlling new employees in the kitchen: besides the high quality, she has to deal with such things as ghosts in the kitchen. Said narrative unfolds as she also stumbles upon the ill-fated history of the mansion from witches, and other chefs who eerily disappeared.

Review:

While “House of Spoils” tries to offer its audiences a mixture of gourmet and horror themes it yields to its expectations. Ariana DeBose gives a great performance, yet, the movie feels pacing issues and does not possess enough tension to impress the viewers. The idea is rather new yet its implementation is rather questionable, and audiences would like to gain more substance and thrill out of such performances.

Positives:

  • Unique Concept: This is because the mixture of Culinary arts and horror is something new in the genre making it an exhilarating experience for food lovers and horror enthusiasts.
  • Strong Performance by Ariana DeBose: The essence of the pressure in cookery is excellently displayed by DeBose, the leading character. That is why the emotion keeps raising the material.
  • Visual Appeal: The work of the camera is good in showing us the glamour of preparing food and the ghostliness of a mansion to complete the viewing.
  • Exploration of Themes: Certain questions of universal interest are illustrated in the movie including fear and greed as voiced in its portrayal of human character and talents under pressure.

Negatives:

  • Pacing Issues: The movie is also very slow in sections, and the pace irons turn slow during the second half while some scenes seem to be wrapped up too quickly.
  • Predictable Plot Elements: Certain plot twists are predictable and this takes a lot out of the surprise element every plan vital twist deserves.
  • Underdeveloped Supporting Characters: What concerns the main character, DeBose, her character’s introduction and development feel organic but the same cannot be said of the rest of the cast.

Technical Aspects:

  • Direction: The pair of Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, behind the scenes, display some potential but seem overly conservative. The film could have used a lot of shockers to maximize the horror aspect of the movie.
  • Cinematography: The look is one of the biggest selling points thanks to which the contrast between the light and the dark is very well used.
  • Editing: Undoubtedly, there are some confusing montage manipulations; a more accurate technique would enhance the film rhythm substantially.
  • Music: It does … the music properly accompanies both comedy and tense scenes but at the same time may be vague here and there though not very memorable.

Performance:

  • Ariana DeBose (Chef): DeBose also brings out a marvellous performance that depicts the dreams as well as the weakness of her character. She does this remarkably well in scenes that warrant humour as well as in scenes that call for drama.
  • Supporting Cast: Arian Moayed as Andres gives a quite good performance although he loses in overshadowing to DeBose. Characters are actor enough but do not get much character growth.

Moviepoptime Review:

The other day, I decided to watch this movie not knowing what it was about, but I ended up liking it. I like the look of it a lot and while the change at the end may have been a tad too drastic…well it’s a movie so a part of going to the movies is expecting certain things. I enjoyed the parts with plant life and the earth tone and just… imagination.

It is relaxing to have a nouveau axe, especially since now they are rare to come by, it seems. Well, I do understand the problems which those people can look into but you know what the problem is nowadays, people look for problems where there aren’t any. The one that I am recommending you try it out and see if you have fun as much as I have.

Conclusion:

To sum it up, House of Spoils is a concept whose potential of merging a cook and fear motifs requires the potential of merging a cook and fear motifs remains rather unconvinced by the final product of this show. For all the power that Ariana DeBose gives to the show, the material is let down by uneven pacing and by and large conventional narrative drives. The movie does a good job of addressing issues of desire and materialism but fails on the aspect of the characters.

All in all, ‘House of Spoils’ is a good and fitting exercise in examining the work conditions of artists in particular the stress coming with the territories, incorporated into a ghost /supernatural narrative, which is of course always timely. I would not consider it precisely a horror movie, but rather a kind of hybrid that will undoubtedly be well-received by fans of Gordon Ramsay’s shows. However, it does offer fun for people seeking a new type of shooter game or the horror one in particular.
