Introduction:

3 Idiots is the 2009 new Indian released Hindi language coming-of-age comedy-drama feature film by director Rajkumar Hirani. In the movie, the life of an engineering college is portrayed through the three friends, Rancho, Farhan and Raju. The story is quite inspirational as it tangles with the conventional perspectives on success and education far from mainstream ideas of what is expected from a human being and how he or she should live his life.

The storyline adopted in the film portrays the present-day trek of Farhan and Raju in search of their friend Rancho and their past college experiences. These flashbacks are helpful to give the viewers some background to the friendship of the Trio and how their ‘ idiot ‘ friend Rancho teaches them ways of looking at the world and the education system.

Story:

The narrative of 3 Idiots revolves around three main characters: By giving the names of the three male leads the film’s characters are introduced; Rancho played by Aamir Khan, Farhan by R. Madhavan and Raju by Sharman Joshi. The colonizers’ adventures lose the film’s focus on their search to find Rancho, who disappeared after college and shift between flashbacks to their years at the Imperial College of Engineering (ICE).

Rancho is an unrestrictive and creative character who goes against much of modern schooling, which is based on knowledge facts and information being learnt and then tested. Young Farhan studies in an engineering school because his father wants him to do it even though he dreams of becoming a photographer. Raju belongs to an economically downtrodden family so the pressure lies with Raju to raise the economic status of the family. This film nostalgically captures this immense pressure on students within the education system in India by climaxing the real tragedy of a student’s suicide due to stress.

Review:

3 Idiots is highly praised also for its interesting script, bright actors cast and the tragedy and joy approaches used in this film. This is further echoed in the movie’s tagline which is “All is well” This is a clear implication as to the sweetness of life that they found themselves in even though they h Noble sue so much hardship and struggles to be able to get to the position of their dreams.

Plus Points:

  • Strong Performances: The Nouveau star cast has excelled in their acting most notably Aamir Khan as Rancho –Dynamic inspiration. R. Despite it being difficult for one to accept that Madhavan who has been his partner Bipasha Basu in the movie has done justice to his role as well as Sharman Joshi has depicted the trials of his character.
  • Cinematic Techniques: Contemporary style and bright appealing pictures can be used and the elements of the layout build are also applicable. Flashbacks are a strong content tool that enables fluidity between past and present maintaining the audience’s interest.
  • Humour and Emotion: tempo 3 Idiots takes time before going from jokes to the sentimental, which should appeal to everyone. It means that its primary role is to deliver important topics of friendship, ambitions, and the problems of the educational system.
  • Cultural Impact: The film led citizens, especially students and parents, to initiate a rethink of the actual education system and success in India. It is observed in the Different educational reforms and discussions happening in India.

Minus Points:

  • Predictability: To some people, this work is too structurally organized and straightforward, particularly as to its storyline’s conclusion. What works is the emotion and structure, while there is a general sense of familiarity to the whole affair.
  • Characterization: Despite such insight into the main character all the actors that depict the recurring characters such as the antagonist Chatur (Omi Vaidya) might be overshadowed. The characters of Holdens and Phoebe’s parents, these characters are described in the plot, but their personalities do not concern the viewers as closely as the personalities of the main protagonists.
  • Idealism vs. Reality: Such portrayal of education and success might not be realistic to some of them hence making the film give an unrealistic perception of education and success. For example, criticism has been made about the fact that the recommendations made in the said film cannot be implemented within the environments of the actual learning institutions.

Technical Aspects:

The movie is technically good to some extent, the background score of the movie by Shantanu Moitra is apt. All of them like ‘All Is Well’, ‘Give Me Some Sunshine’ etc became sort of rallying tunes for the youths in the wake of the spirit of the film. The film is full of splendid visuals handled by C.K. Muraleedharan especially the Ladakh parts which augments the overall appeal of the film.

Performance:

It arises from the way Aamir Khan plays Rancho, the protagonist of the movie, brought out in a way that a character who is so intelligent can also be so likeable. R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi give good support and the inclusion of emotions in the movie gives the film a lift. There is also Boman Irani as the college dean Dr Viru Sahastrabuddhe but he mostly looks and acts like a comic character despite being the real villain of the movie.
