Dhanush and director Arun Matheswaran collaborated on Captain Miller, the first installment of a three-part action-adventure film. The film, which was originally released in Tamil during Sankranthi, is now in Telugu theaters. Check out our review to find out how it is.
Story:
Agneeswara (Dhanush) is a lower caste in a village set before independence. He joins the British Army simply to gain respect. However, he regrets fighting his own people and abandons the army after killing the General. Did Captain Miller retrieve it? What drove Agneeswara to kill the British General? Who is Bhanumathi (Priyanka Arul Mohan), and how does she fit into the story? What turned Agneeswara into Captain Miller? The movie will reveal the answers.
Plus Points:
Dhanush, a National Award winner, fully immerses himself in his character, delivering a polished performance with effective emotional expressions, particularly during action sequences.
Shiva Rajkumar, a Kannada star, and Sundeep Kishan, a Tollywood actor, shine in their respective roles, demonstrating brilliance despite their limited screen time.
The well-crafted action sequences, especially during the interval and climax, captivate the audience, and the music enhances the overall experience.
Minus points:
Director Arun Matheswaran uses a nonlinear screenplay to tell the story in six chapters. While the narrative structure is not confusing, there is room for a more captivating and dynamic first half.
Some characters, such as Priyanka Arul Mohan and Jayaprakash, add little value to the film. It is clear that Priyanka Mohan missed an opportunity to showcase her performance in a few scenes.
The film maintains a serious tone throughout, with no inclusion of other emotions such as romance or comedy, limiting its appeal to a specific audience.
Scenes about Tamil nativity may not resonate with Telugu audiences. Furthermore, the Telugu subtitles contain numerous grammatical and translation errors, which is unexpected for a film of this size.
Technical aspects:
Arun Matheswaran, as a writer and director, makes an adequate impression. A more engaging first half and a compelling narrative could help the film’s overall impact.
GV Prakash Kumar’s musical score stands out, as does Siddhartha Nuni’s decent cinematography. While the editing is generally satisfactory, removing a few unnecessary scenes may improve the viewing experience. The film has decent production values.
Verdict:
Overall, Captain Miller has its moments. Dhanush’s outstanding performance, the well-executed action sequences, and GV Prakash Kumar’s musical prowess are all notable highlights. However, the film’s first half is slow, with redundant scenes, a consistently serious tone, and a lack of emotional depth. If you enjoy serious-toned action dramas, Captain Miller is worth considering; otherwise, alternative entertainment options may be more appropriate.
