Story:
Maharaja is based on the life of a barber named Maharaja (Vijay Sethupathi) who goes on to file a missing complaint about his lost trash can which he lovingly named Lakshmi. This trash can has a lot of importance for him because it is the only thing that saved his daughter’s life in a tragedy. It will happen in episodic style and in the form of flashback which involves Maharaja and his present day ordeals and the picture of his dead wife and efforts put in to bring up his daughter Jothi.
In the further sequence of the movie, the character of Anurag Kashyap is added who depicts the life of another father who is living a very happy and successful life. And here, the film uses humor and tragedy as the two main contrasting elements which depict the ridiculousness of Maharaja’s situation and his peculiar search for a lost trash can.
Review:
The film is directed by Nithilan Saminathan with Vijay Sethupathi in his 50th role as the film’s protagonist. The film is built around a man, who is a barber by occupation and who is left without a home as it was burglarized. He very enigmatically informs the policemen that his ‘Lakshmi’ is missing, possibly a woman or a goddess or a statue of the goddess. In revenge for his father’s death, the barber goes in search of that which was stolen.
Several critics have identified the film’s screenplay as creative; therefore complimenting it as being funny and at the same time addressing some profound themes. Especially Vijay Sethupathi’s acting skills have been under high appreciation while bringing the best of him as an actor. Anurag Kashyap also does well in his part as the supportive husband and Mamta Mohandas also puts up a good show.
However, the sceptics assume that some parts of the series may be easily foreseen. However, the overall response has been on the performance aspect and the growth of the characters to a large extent. All in all, Maharaja is one of the most recommended Tamil movies for entertainment, action, drama and humour elements in it.
Positives:
- Engaging Narrative: The plot of the film never gets boring, which makes the audience interested in the upcoming moments and looking forward to them.
- Vijay Sethupathi’s Performance: Sethupathi is Class, he has done very well to show the comical part as well as the emotional part of the character which seems very real and impressive.
- Dark Humor: It is also interesting to note that there are many humorous undertones in the film especially when dealing with the themes of the disappearance of a trash can which is amusing, given the setting and content of the movie.
- Creative Direction: That is why the movie direction by Nithilan Saminathan is quite creative including a non-linear narrative that never idly bores the viewer but also tests their attention and perception.
- Strong Screenplay: The screenplay is very strong because its scenarios are rich in inventive context and sharp jokes, though the principle of their build-up and obtaining is very close to meticulous—and this fact also works to the movie’s advantage.
Negatives:
- Contrived Moments: Some comic accents seem provoked or artificially compiled and do not add to the film’s naturalness and large-heartedness.
- Clichéd Final Act: It puts more reliance on the typical clichéd action sequences that are typical of the Tamil cinema which may conflict with the fresh narrative devised earlier in the film.
- Underdeveloped Characters: On this aspect of character development, the film is quite able to give depth and full characterization to the two leads but some of the other characters more so the female ones could have also profited the narrative by being more complicated.
- Pacing Issues: At many times the movie appears unsteady in terms of pace which becomes rather noticeable during the second half, where the plot thickens and coming up with a climax might look somewhat contrived.
Technical Aspects:
The technicality associated with the production of Maharaja is well implemented to suit the concept of the movie. The work of the cinematographer enhances the comedic and the dramatic elements that are present in the film making it more of a dramatic comedy. The editing also effectively sustains the story’s hold which makes the movie coherent despite its happenings in parallel timelines. Sound effects and music enhance the film plot and create a good tense atmosphere.
Performance:
It could be said that Maharaja mainly belongs to Vijay Sethupathi and this actor’s performance can be deemed its major asset. He plays a good character portraying emotions such as pain, comedy, and anger which are very compelling in the movie and this makes him a force to reckon with in the film.
Thus working with Sethupathi helps the director depict the varied nature of the characters with ease from desperate comedy to intense emotional scenes. Alas not as prominent but Anurag Kashyap does a good job of enhancing the film’s story. The rest of the cast, including Mamta Mohandas and Natarajan Subramaniam, are also suitable for the movie’s characters, though at times these actors give way to the primary cast.
Moviepoptime Review:
Maharaja is probably one of the best movies that have been produced in the last few years. I remember the time when India produced such an excellent film it has been quite some time now. It is akin to defining one of the most cherished gems of the Indian cinema for sure! My goodness, just the screenplay is really amazing, the direction is excellent and the performances are good. The entire movie has thus managed to interest you! This is also an excellent watch because of its non-linear structure! Once again Vijay Sethupathi has won the hearts of the audience full of applause.
The most surprising of all was Anurag Kashyap but for the role, he did quite well and I thought he pulled it off nicely. For instance, in the movie, there is a segment where you are doomed, out of hope, but suddenly, things turn to the worse and then you are back to normal. Well done indeed, or congratulations go to Nithilan Swaminathan, the filmmaker for a great picture!
Conclusion:
Maharaja is a dark humour and serious drama combined movie, which has many aspects in making and which includes the excellent performances among them, Sethupathi Vijay. The movie also has its share of weaknesses, which include forced instances and a predictable ending but over the movie has an interesting plot and the direction style makes this a noticeable movie in today’s Tamil cinema. It makes the viewers think about the issues of life and gives a good storytelling platform that can be viewed on several aspects. Thus, Maharaja is worth considering as a major movie accomplishment, which reveals the possibility of experimenting with narrative in Indian films.
