Story:

The C-plot begins with a young happy wife Dani (Carolyn Bracken) who with her husband begins the process of rebuilding a house situated on a barren island which is helped by their husband. There is one time during the movie when a naked man, Olin, who belongs to a mental institution nearby, and experiencing a state of schizophrenia recreates their home and tells Dani that there is danger. Shortly thereafter, Dani ‘gets killed’ in quite some detail and Olin is seen as a potential candidate.

A year later Dani’s blind twin sister Darcy portrayed by the same actress Jessica Bracken comes back in search of the truth about her sister’s death. The gory wrappings of a grieving Darcy, and the brooding paranormal air of the life-sized wooden doll given to newly-framed Ted with his new girlfriend Yana, served to build the gloomy suspense to horror in anteceding scenes until the climax of the flick.

Review:

According to the critics, Oddity is suspenseful and can at least set up an atmosphere, further as conceptual as playing with the narrative type. What is YouTube’s greatest asset? It’s the subscribers, who turn the platform into the second most-watched channel in the world. The relative pace of the film allures the audience due to the construction of characters and suspense filmed throughout the movie to create a sense of dread without relying on conventional jump scares. The film’s slow-burn narrative keeps viewers engaged as it builds suspense through character development and eerie visuals.

Positives:

  • Atmospheric Direction: What is most impressive about this movie is that Damian McCarthy achieves the mood of dread and suspense throughout the film using a slow-moving tempo and camera framing.
  • Strong Performances: Bracken subtly does a great job of playing both sisters and the viewers get the real sense of the rivalry. Both Gwilym Lee and Caroline Menton are also good supports to the film that consolidates the narrative.
  • Engaging Storytelling: The movie’s signage and mystery make the audience focus; thus, there is an understanding of how Dani died.

Negatives:

  • Pacing Issues: Defects that were criticized by some participants related to the narrative style and pace – some of the scenes are too long; some are short; this may sell not good.
  • Predictable Plot Points: The film, however, has its cinematic hooks here and there; but, for those who are aficionados of horror genres, some of the scenes might be quite typical and thereby make them somewhat foreseeable at some quarters.
  • Underdeveloped Supporting Characters: Many of the main characters are rather stereotyped; it is something that the viewer may find rather frustrating in the development of such characters.

Technical Aspects:

  • Direction: However, McCarthy does not go into a deeper explanation; the author just puts horror with what he considers psychological features as friends, while some scenes might be traditional.
  • Cinematography: The job of photography was handled by Colm Hogan, and he was able to provide the horror feel of the movie by providing the right shadows and lighting.
  • Sound Design: Still another example of the usage of sound is about music, to heighten the eerie tones of the picture and add suspense.

Performance:

The audience feels very much for both of them and this is well captured by Carolyn Bracken for both Dani and Darcy’s characters. Gwilym Lee, who plays the role of character Ted, and Caroline Menton as Yana do a competent job and make the movie’s supernatural theme very much believable with an earthly plane.

Moviepoptime Review:

Oddity is a typical, though fairly accomplished contemporary horror film set in a somewhat more traditional haunted house environment. The technical aspects such as the stage setting, the lighting and the sounds are integrated seamlessly and all performances from a small cast are remarkable, not forgetting that it has the right pace in its small running time. But the fact that amazed me most of all is that the movie contains some of the most efficiently realized and filmed scares, to which I had a chance to turn my attention in recent years. While you could probably catch this on Shudder now, if you can you should try to see this in theaters.

Conclusion:

The movie classifies itself as; a” psychological horror supernatural mystery” and rightly so; it’s a spine-chilling thriller. Insofar as pacing, story complexity, and predictability, the movie can be criticized nonetheless, Bracken’s performances and the opaque style of the director who shot the film do look impressive. Egyptian audiences will not be let down by “Oddity” for most of its plot will certainly arouse the horror interest, primarily due to the impact of the lead character, Damian McCarthy. This appraisal of loss embracing the fear of the unknown is perfect for whetting the viewers’ appetite merely to disorient them with loss and fear which are left unanswered and the Farewell tour continues far past the closing credits.
