Review:
“It Ends With Us” by Justin Baldoni, where the story of a young lady, Lily Bloom, portrayed by Blake Lively, who is in her late twenties and decides to leave college to start her life in Boston and open a flower shop. She is (Jenn) a smart pretty dedicated professional who gets into a relationship with Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni), a handsome neurosurgeon, who however has a dark past and refuses to get into a relationship. Growing up, Lily starts falling in love with Owen Castleman (Ethan Peck) but once she meets her high school sweetheart, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), things get more complicated for Lily as she learns more about love.
The audience has said that it delivers the emotion of the book, love, domestic violence and overcoming the odds. About the acting, one can identify that Blake Lively has done an excellent job in creating a realistic image of the main character Lily with her efforts to overcome her problems within a sphere of relations.
There has been also positive reinforcement about the performances and emotionality of the movie, but some people are concerned that the film might not give enough attention to the book’s complexity. Further, it is also noticed that some plot points might be stereotypical for those who became familiar with films of this genre.
Thus, the creators of “It Ends With Us” seek to shoot a tender drama based on high issues with an incredible love story that should appeal both to fans of the novel and the viewers who did not get acquainted with the work of Colleen Hoover.
Positives:
- Emotional Themes: The movie works to explore grave issues related to domestic violence and helps to raise awareness of the feelings and challenges of the women who become victims of it.
- Cinematography: The visualization of Boston especially the setting of the flower shop gives the work an artistic appeal which makes it more appealing.
- Strong Performances: Blake Lively acts quite convincingly as Lily and prima facie, has done a brilliant job in portraying her psychological transformation.
Negatives:
- Predictable Plot: Some of the reviewers observed that the movie’s plot resembled a standard pattern and failed to deliver enough powerful material to make the viewers get lost in it.
- Character Development: Despite its stunning setting and excellent use of special effects, key characters Ryle and Atlas namely are less developed, which subtracts the viewer’s concerned feelings.
- Pacing Issues: With regards to the aspects of cinematography, there should be mentioned the fact that the film has some problems with the pace of the action; some parts have been conducted in a very fast way, while the others are full of scenes that seem to be exhausting to watch.
Technical Aspects:
- Direction: Though in Justin Baldoni’s direction attempt has been made to blend serious issues with some sort of romantic tendencies as argued by some, it does not sit well.
- Editing: Several editing decisions have been pointed out as lacking either building tension or evoking a feeling as in the scenes of spousal abuse.
- Soundtrack: There have been negative comments made towards this integration of popular music during scenes that depict high emotions this has been due to the perceived trivialization of themes.
Performances:
About the characters In my opinion, Blake Lively, who portrayed the role of Lily, is wonderful here; the girl is beautiful and delicate but she is very strong at the same time. Justin Baldoni has done an appealing job portraying the character Ryle, but critics justly pointed at the lack of depth to make him an ambiguous character like an abuser. The rest of the ensemble, particularly Brandon Sklenar as Atlas, provides depth to the story but most of their character can easily be described as background fill-ins.
Moviepoptime Review:
I have been eagerly for the movie since the release of the movie trailer. Also have been browsing a lot on the web, about how people especially book readers do not find a choice of cast well since they are older looking than what one can expect to read in a book.
In the movie, all the factors have been portrayed and after watching the movie, I feel otherwise. From the perspective of the movie, I believe the cast was chosen appropriately. Other people have also worked hard especially Blake as we have seen here. He has made the characters to be perfectly flawed. It does this by the use of songs in the movie that make the moments more joyful. In general, it was astonishing, it was a full-scale of different emotions. I had a lot of fun (It wasn’t boring at all).
Conclusion:
“It Ends With Us’ is a film that tries to showcase the effects of domestic violence as a major social issue that needs to be combatted carefully. Whereas it is successful in presenting themes and featuring good actors, it excels in melodrama, it stumbles in the area of pacing, redundancy, and growth arcs. The film might be appealing to the people who have read the source and may leave expectations for the viewer who expected more deeper view of such a complicated matter. In general, it can be considered as an example of a call to discussion of the problem of domestic violence, but many viewers are likely to experience some dissatisfaction regarding the level of emotions they feel.
