Yatra 2, a biographical political drama, debuted in theaters today, exactly five years after its predecessor, Yatra, was released.
Story:
The story begins with the 2009 AP election campaign, following the death of then-Chief Minister Rajashekara Reddy (Mammotty). The film revolves around what happens next in Jagan Mohan Reddy’s (Jiiva) life, including his political career and personal life.
Plus Points:
Mahi V Raghav tells the story in a very neat manner. The way he handles the story and screenplay is impressive.
Jiiva is decent in his role, and his portrayal of the real-life Jagan is commendable. He performs admirably within his limited scope.
Mammootty also delivers his best performance. His conversations with the public are emotional and cause goosebumps.
Santhosh Narayanan’s magnificent score and songs breathe new life into the film. He should be commended for not letting the film down with any dull moments.
Minus points:
The story is written very cleverly. Mahi V Raghav does not go into detail about some of the most serious events in YS Jagan’s life. He could have focused more on political and personal issues to discuss in the film.
Aside from the story, Mahi V Raghav could have done a better job of portraying Jagan through Jiiva. Jiiva does a good job of impersonating Jagan on screen, but he lacks emotion in some scenes.
The writer-director could have included some emotional scenes between Jagan, his family, and the general public. Such scenes would undoubtedly have made Yatra 2 more interesting.
Technical aspects:
Mahi V Raghav, the writer and director, was successful in portraying his vision for the film. However, he could have concentrated on emotional elements that would have added more value to the film.
The casting director deserves to be recognized for selecting the appropriate actors for the characters. The music by Santhosh Narayanan is exceptional. The editing by Shravan Katikaneni and the cinematography by Madhie are excellent. The short runtime is definitely a plus, but the screenplay makes the second half appear a little slow.
Verdict:
Overall, Yatra 2 is an honest attempt to depict the events in YS Jagan’s personal and political lives following the death of his father, Rajashekara Reddy. Mammootty and Jiiva excel in their roles. Music composer Santhosh Narayanan takes the film to the next level. The drawbacks include a lack of emotional connection in a few intense scenes, a slow-paced second half, and a few unresolved events in YS Jagan’s life. If you are a fan of the respective leader, Yatra 2 will be the best biographical political film, but if you watch it as a general audience, you will leave with the impression that you have seen a good movie.
